Act One Plot Summary of Pygmalion

George Bernard Shaw wrote over forty plays during the course long life of 94 years. Pygmalion, written in 1913, became his most famous work. Check out our article on Shaws biography to learn more about his life and literature. Quick Synopsis Its the tale of a conceited professor of linguistics, Henry Higgins, and the brash, incorrigible young woman named Eliza Doolittle. Higgins sees the cockney girl as a great challenge. Can she learn to speak like a refined English lady? Higgins endeavors to transform Eliza in his own image, and he gets much more than he ever bargained for. Pygmalion in Greek Mythology The title of the play is derived from ancient Greece. According to Greek Mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who created a beautiful statue of a woman. The gods grant the artist a wish by making the sculpture come to life. The main character in Shaws play is not a sculptor; however, he does become enamored with his own creation. Plot Summary of Act One Professor Henry Higgins wanders the streets of London, absorbing the local color and studying the various dialects those around him. A crowd of people huddle together, due to the sudden downpour of rain. A wealthy woman tells her adult son, Freddy to hail a taxi. He complains but obeys, bumping into a young woman selling flowers: Eliza Doolittle. She asks a man to buy flowers from her. He declines, but gives her spare change, for charitys sake. Another man warns Eliza that she should be careful; a stranger has been writing down every word she has been saying. The stranger is Prof. Henry Higgins who reveals his shorthand notes. She is distressed, thinking that she is in trouble. Henry rebukes her: HIGGINS: Dont be ridiculous. Whos hurting you, you silly girl? The crowd gives Higgins a hard time when they realize he is a gentleman instead of a policeman. At first, the citizens are quite concerned about the poor flower girl. Eliza expresses her distress (and reveals the nature of the crowd) in the following quote and subsequent stage direction: ELIZA: I aint done nothing wrong by speaking to the gentleman. Ive a right to sell flowers if I keep off the kerb. (Hysterically) Im a respectable girl: so help me, I never spoke to him except to ask him to buy a flower off me. (General hubbub, mostly sympathetic to the flower girl, but deprecating her excessive sensibility. Cries of Dont start hollerin. Whos hurting you? Nobodys going to touch you. Whats the good of fussing? Steady on. Easy, easy, etc., come from the elderly staid spectators, who pat her comfortingly. Less patient ones bid her shut her head, or ask her roughly what is wrong with her. (...) The flower girl, distraught and mobbed, breaks through them to the gentleman, crying mildly.) Oh, sir, dont let him charge me. You dunno what it means to me. Theyll take away my character and drive me on the streets for speaking to gentlemen. Prof. Higgins listens to peoples accents and cleverly recognizes where they are from and where they have been. The crowd is both impressed and perturbed at his uncanny abilities. The rain stops and the crowd disperses. Colonel Pickering, the man who gave Doolittle spare change, is intrigued by Higgins. The professor explains that he can identify a persons origins based solely on phonetics, the science of speech. Meanwhile, Eliza is still nearby, sulking and muttering to herself. Higgins complains that the flower girls speech is an insult to the majestic English language. Yet he also boasts that he is so skilled in phonetics that he could train her to speak like royalty. Pickering reveals his name, explaining that he has written a book on Indian dialects. By coincidence, Higgins had been hoping to meet the distinguished Colonel, just as Col. Pickering had been hoping to meet Higgins. Delighted by their chance encounter, Higgins insists that Pickering stay at his home. Before they leave, Eliza begs them to buy some of her flowers. Higgins drops a large amount of coins into her basket, amazing the young woman who very likely has never paid so much. She celebrates by taking a taxi cab home. Freddy, the wealthy young man who originally hailed the taxi says Well, Im dashed, in response to the flower girls confident attitude.

Hip Hop Nationalism Free Essays

Hip hop is a form of art that has been popular for the past twenty years. Although people in recent years often mistake rap music as vulgar and ill-mannered, the hip hop community continues to provide a great way to channel emotion and soul into their music. In his article, â€Å"The State of Rap: Time and Place† Jeffrey Louis Decker illustrates the black nationalism within the hip hop community by exploring how Black Nationalism can be accounted for within the hip hop music. We will write a custom essay sample on Hip Hop Nationalism or any similar topic only for you Order Now Before hip hop was introduced into the American culture, the black community felt as if their place of origin was Africa. This was the time where the black community romanticized their own politics (Decker 2008, 54). Garveyism, introduced by Marcus Garvey, sparked the early Black Nationalist movements. During the Black Nationalist movement it promoted an array of black pride which later provided great inspiration for upcoming hip hop artists who â€Å"rapped† to their audience the struggles of the everyday black individual. The styles of artists later became more â€Å"Afrocentric† which meant that the music revolved around expressing self worth. Artist such as Afrika Bambaataa introduced his style of music to the world having his music known as the earliest form of hip hop. As for women, they were interested in promoting the idea that they were from â€Å"Mother Africa†. Women hip hop artist were fascinated by the idea of black women liberation, so most of them started to incorporate those ideas in their verses. There are rap songs that promote the militant â€Å"Nation of Islam† which later became known as the Black Panther Party. As more injustices occur to the black community, hip hop music became a pedestal to voice their opinions. For example, when Rodney King was brutally beat by the LAPD on March 3, 1991 (Decker 2008). The whole Rodney King incident consequently gave Ice Cube inspiration for his album Death Certificate. Hip hop artists are usually not involved in politics but are most strongly involved in the cultural politics which tie to the working and urban poor blacks. Eventually hip hop artists later regarded themselves by the name â€Å"hip hop nationalists†. In the sixties, self proclaimed hip hop nationalist rapper Paris debut his album, The Devil Made Me Do It, which sent a message on how he plans on building the black nation. From his tracks â€Å"Panther Power† to â€Å"The Hate That Hate Made†, Paris made sure that his audience knew he associated with the Black Panther Party. During 1988, hip hop marked a landmark on rap music history ever since MTV promoted their hip hop program called â€Å"Yo, MTV Raps! † and within the same year a hip hop group, Public Enemy, released their second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which gave the black nationalist its first publicized expression for two decades. The multiple times the black community was socially mistreated, hip hop artists continued to voice their opinions. I believe hip hop is great to voice an opinion and promote self worth. Ordeals such as the Rodney King case sparked a huge outrage within the black community. Decker mentions in the article that during the Rodney King trial, the white officers from LAPD have been acquitted by an all-white jury charged for the brutality of Rodney King (Decker 2008, 55). Ice Cube was called in for an interview, yet he declined because of the ties he has made with the black community. Situations such as the Rodney King trail provided a lot of social tension between whites and blacks. Decker claims that many of nation-conscious rappers, like Ice Cube, try to sustain their ties to the black community which their music is a part of. Hip hop artists who rap about Black Nationalism are needed because it uncovers the truth about how whites often mistreat blacks. Rapping is a way to express one’s opinion and also give perspective. Rappers such as Paris capture their perspective in their lyrics they have in his album, The Devil Made Me Do It. The music that is promoted by the rappers offer the black population self worth. At the time, the moral of the black population had been at an all time low considering that blacks were most of the time given the shorter end of the stick. Counselling and Rehabilitation and Vice Versa †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the Counselling and Rehabilitation and Vice Versa. Answer: Introduction: Domain can be defined as a particular field of thought or interest that something or someone has control over it and can also cause a certain influence .On the other hand, Fields of practice refers to the small sectors that are divided from the main area of concern. The main domain for a domestic violence counsellor in a local NGO is family service. Mostly deals with various members of a family being violated, either individually or as a couple. Domestic violence refers to aggressive behavior in a home setting, whereby abuse by one person against the spouse is involved. It is also referred to as family violence. Domestic violence also involves fields of practice like violation of children rights, parents and the elderly people. The abuse or violence can be verbal-like quarrels and insults and sexual abuse-like rape and violent physical abuse such as choking, beating and female genital mutilation. Generally, the target population for family violence would include; young girls, women of the middle age and also elder women. This is because domestic violence victims are mostly females, and they tend to experience more severe forms of violence. This doesnt mean that men are not victim .They are, but in rare cases (Ramsay, Rutterford, Gregory, Dunne, Eldridge, Sharp, Feder, 2012). Many girls who experience this abuse, they find it hard to cope with future life of marriage .Domestic violence counselors have to intervene by supporting the victims and help them develop self-esteem and confidence. They do so by trying to get them out of that fear .They also try to end the cycle of violence because many people who experience abuse in childhood become enablers, involving themselves in a series of relationships that escalate into abuse and violence. This affects their normal functioning of their daily activities, and well functioning of their bodies. As a domestic violence counsellor in a local NGO, there are some vital elements that should be observed in order to give quality service. Conducting work within an ethical framework is a critical aspect of professional practice and the possession of abstract specialized knowledge. Knowledge can be defined as the clear and certain understanding or awareness of something as opposed to opinion. There are various practice approaches which can be used by a human service worker depending with the field of practice (Healey, Connolly Humphreys, 2018). For instance, someone working as a domestic violence counselor in a local NGO would prefer to use theoretical approach rather than model or any other .This is because theory is a way of making sense used to explain the relationship between two or more phenomenon. Client centered approach is appropriate in this situation of counseling people who have undergone family violence (Brewer, Roy Smith, 2010).).Theory enables one to better explain what they already know first and relate it with the matter at hand. One should not rely on only one theory to inform his practice and instead should be well conversant with a variety (. Rao, Horton Raguram, 2012).).This is because clients problems are different and need to be dealt differently to satisfaction. Substance misuse has being a field of concern to many people. This is because most people have started to misuse substances without caring their age, gender and even the side effects accrued by the drug abused. Children, parents and even elderly people are victims. The commonly abused drugs include alcohol, tobacco and marijuana amongst others. People have decided to start rehabilitation centres to attend to drug user. Free counselling is offered to the willing clients to help them understand themselves and make decision for a better change. Treatment is also offered in this facility. Some of the current social issues concerning substance misuse may include, legalizing of illicit drugs (Racine, Forlini, 2010). Some people depend on selling substances like marijuana so that they can improve their living standards, so if this drug is completely illegal they would have a challenge for its their cash crop. Nonmatter how the government prohibits its consumption, they illegally sell. As a social worker in the field of substance misuse I oppose the idea of the majority that marijuana causes no harm to its users. All illicit drugs are harmful to the users health and should be completely prohibited. From the clients that we deal with in the rehabilitation program, we have noted that marijuana and stimulant users have higher occurrence of psychiatric illness compared to non-users. (Lankenau, Teti, Silva, Bloom, Harocopos, Treese, 2012). Drug addiction is brain chronic disorder. Addicted people are in the state of inability to abstain or do without the drug. The social work ers have the know-how of dealing with addicts and helps them change their behavior and also encourage them in counselling. Secondly, it has come to great concern that most of the people who were born normal but now are mentally sick, its as a result of substance misuse. Some of the medical test that have been done to them as a way of research has proven it right. The social workers really have a challenging task to deal with mentally ill clients. Rehabilitation centres are trying to avail the required medicines for them hence making work easier for the social workers. Ethics refers to code of contact or how to behave. Social workers have a code of conduct that they should adhere to while dealing with alcohol and other drug users (Schroeder, Ford, 2012). First, confidentiality-As a social worker, one should be able to keep secret. When the clients are assured that their details will not be disclosed to anyone, they voluntarily come for counselling and rehabilitation and vice versa. Secondly, the social worker should also be informed on how to deal with different clients. Some have mild problems so easy to handle while others have serious disorders and need special attendance with a lot of care. Counselling and treatment is offered to clients depending with their situation. Proper administering leads to a positive change (Zgierska, Miller, Rabago, 2012). Lastly, social workers should respect and promote the right of the clients to self-determination. They should assist them to identify and clarify their goals for they may know better than the clie nt. Social workers may only discourage clients self-determination if the clients potential action pose harm to them or others. References Healey, L., Connolly, M., Humphreys, C. (2018). Concepts of Supply Chain Management

The pull and push strategy Supply chain management is the matrix of the activities involved in the process of a seller availing goods and services to the final consumer (Haag, S., Cummings, M., McCubbrey, D., Pinsonneault, A., Donovan, R., 2006). It therefore entails all the processes through which raw materials are transformed into useful products and how the products will reach the final consumer.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Concepts of Supply Chain Management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This normally is not an easy task considering the nature of certain products and the geographical distance that may exist between the producer and the buyer. It is these challenges that create the importance of supply chain management as a subject in business. Most organizations therefore regard the concept of supply chain management very highly (Hines, T., 2004). The push and pull strategy is a concept in supply chain management. The seller or the producer of the commodity directs it towards the consumer by ‘pushing’ towards that orientation (Simchi-Levi D.,Kaminsky P., Simchi-levi E., 2007). The consumer on the other hand attracts the commodity being directed to them by ‘pulling’ towards him. The push and pull strategy may also imply the process of interaction between the producer and the consumer through the process of interaction. The interface connecting the push and the pull aspects creates the boundary. Production for sales in this concept is therefore pegged on the given demand and not on sales forecasts. When production is based on demand an organization will be in a position to operate efficiently reducing the costs incurred on wastages on excess supply. The sandwich making company is confronted with a problem of increased demand. It therefore seeks the modalities to cope up with this upsurge. The push and pull strategy can effectively be used as a very i mportant solution to the problem at hand. This is because the push and pull strategy is effective in a demand driven production process such as the case given. On that note, the consumer is already demanding i.e. ‘pulling’ 12,000 items per week. It therefore forces the producer to supply that number of items of that period. This necessitates the sudden increase in the production process by increasing the raw materials. Sandwiches as perishable consumable products will require a very short structured production process so as to minimize the losses. This necessitates a total redesigning of the whole production process with an objective of meeting the demand. The whole process will kick off in procurement of the ingredients used in making the sandwiches. The producers are therefore forced to acquire four times as much ingredient as before.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF L earn More This may not be easy hence adequate provisions must be made. It may involve contracting additional suppliers or engaging bigger ones. The product in question is sandwich which may be required in large numbers at particular times of the day say morning. Therefore the suppliers must be able to supply adequate ingredients to meet strict deadlines and in appropriate numbers. Non perishable items may be procured in very large numbers and stored in the company. The production process will also require a quick fix up to facilitate the production of the large output expected. There may be the need to acquire new machinery and upgrade the existing ones. This may pose financial challenges but the huge demand expected can easily guarantee more capital. Production can also be enhanced by improving on the chain of supply. Sandwiches will require a very short chain of supply and the management can facilitate this by eliminating unnecessary procedural chains that may hinder quick deliv ery of the sandwiches to the retailers. It is also imperative that the management comes up with longer or more shifts so as to create more labor hours in order to supply the increased demand. In this case, since the demand has more than tripled, it will create the need to engage more workers either on permanent or on contractual basis. The management will also be forced to look into it’s the distribution strategy now that more sandwiches need to be supplied. It will need a good delivery scheme that will ensure that the sandwiches reach the clients on timely basis. Advertisement may none increase in demand and consequently the need to boost operations will the advertising expenses of the company. Supply chain management only works well if the individual activities in the production process are totally integrated with one another other than operating as individual functional units. Operating an integrated supply chain requires a continuous information flow (Lambert and Cooper, 2000). This however is not the case in many organizations where individual functional units in the organization are totally separated from each other under the banner of division of labor. This has created a lot of inefficiencies in many organizations. It is therefore important that our sandwich making company consider integrating the different functional units in the organization with one another and clearly demarcate the boundaries.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on Concepts of Supply Chain Management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Since integration is best facilitated by communication, the marketing department can communicate to the suppliers to the increase in demand. This information should also be supplied to all the departments in the organization to enable them boost their operations. The increase in demand has created the need for increased output and the boundaries outlining the responsibly of eac h department should clearly be marked. However, this should be done with a lot of caution so that the process of integration is never compromised. The cycle view The cycle view is a perspective of looking at the supply chain question as a system involving recurrent processes that create a cyclic nature of activities. For instance, the procurement department will procure materials for use and these materials will have to be replenished once they are done. Several cycles may exist in the organization. These cycles normally stem from the recurrent activities that are conducted during the daily operations of the company in supplying sandwiches to the consumers. The cycles may be at the production stage, supplier stage or at the procurement stage. The sandwich making company may view shown below. The first stage involves the seller marketing the product to attract the consumer. The consumer in this case is the, supermarkets and the other users of the sandwiches. The supermarkets will the n place the order which in this case has been estimated at around 12,000 units. After receiving the order, the company will make it possible to supply the order within the specified time frame. This will enable the management reduce the frequency of sales returns caused by delays in goods receipt. The order will then be received by the customers. The process will therefore take place in this cyclic manner. It can be noted from the illustration that the whole cyclic process share the same information. The issue at hand is the fact that an order is needed by the customers and this creates the series of processes culminating in the provision of that commodity to the required person.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? The procurement of these items is a day to day activity that requires an effective mechanism in place so as to avoid any shortages. The process of converting or preparing the sandwiches is also a routine process that will involve a structured formula conducted daily. Provision of these finished sandwiches to the users is another process entails a routine process. The sandwiches have to be supplied to meet strict deadlines and this process has to go on daily. It therefore creates the need to make adequate provisions to be able to meet such strict deadlines. This therefore creates a cyclic version of operations. The cycle perspective enables people to view organizations as a simple processes engaged in efficient service delivery (Lambert and Cooper, 2000). Simplicity will quicken the communication process hence allowing for faster decision making. This con trasts the normal version where organizations are complex bureaucracies with very procedural decision making processes that hinder effective operations. The Supply Chain Operations The Supply Chain Operations Reference SCOR provides a distinct facility that integrates the best practices, systems, technology advances and all the good aspects of the organization together. It creates a platform through which the internal operations of the business can effectively be carried on. In addition, it facilitates and enhances the understanding of the internal workings of the organizations. Our sandwich making company can effectively apply SCOR in its systems to enhance the operations. SCOR as a reference system can enable the organization apply standardized formal system and organizational language to improve interaction and communication among the supply chain partners. Each and every organization, good performance notwithstanding, will always be faced with a myriad challenges most of the tim es. This applies also to our sandwich making factory. It therefore creates the need to use SCOR as a mechanism to address the many problems that organizations face. This is because the process of SCOR strives to harmonize the business practices of different organizations into a better unified model. The company will therefore be better placed with the SCOR strategy now that the demand expected has increased tremendously. However the strategy can only operate better if the support systems are provided and caution exercised. Design Chain Operations Reference on the other hand is an inter-industry instrument that is often used in managing design chains across organizations. Indeed, no organization operates in isolation. At one point or another, all organizations interact with their customers, suppliers, competitors and the authorities. It therefore creates the need to design a system that will enable this complex interaction. DCOR therefore comes in handy in this situation by providing an effective cross-boundary mechanism that effectively manages the design chain in a free manner by ensuring that organizations relate properly and effectively. Level 1 of the DCOR model is the effective model to use in our company that is faced with strict deadlines. This model will boost the external interaction of the company so as to reduce any delays that may otherwise be met. Reference List Haag, S., Cummings, M., McCubbrey, D., Pinsonneault, A., Donovan, R. Vandalism and how it is a problem today.

Vandalism and how it is a problem today. Our Definition Of Vandalism Vs.Prior to beginning our research of vandalism we began discussing our own definition of vandalism and what it meant to us. The following is what we came up with for our own description of vandalism. Vandalism is the act in which one purposefully commits an act in which they either destroy, trash, wreck, ruin, or render unusable a possession in which they are not the rifle owner of. This would also consist of acts such as graffiti. Now let's see our definition compared to that of other legitimate sources.Dictionary.com - Willful or malicious destruction of public or private property.Old Dictionary - intentional destruction or damage to propertyWebster's Dictionary - Destruction or spoiling of what should be preserved. If you compare our explanation of the word vandalism to these other you can see the relation and how these are nearly the same meanings in different terminology.Graffiti in Bucharest, July 2007.To achieve the most random of results from our e xamination we handed out exactly forty-eight surveys. We did this so that there were twelve per grade and precisely twenty-four male and an equal amount of females receiving our questionnaire. An additional unanticipated piece of information that we came across was the fact that just 10% of the people felt some sort of regret or remorse for their wrong doings. This is somewhat shocking taking into consideration that we found 28% have admitted to being caught. This means that some people still aren't bothered by the actuality that they have been caught and this isn't preventing them from committing such crimes again. This would lead one to believe that people aren't taking the punishments seriously enough, which is most likely for the reason that they aren't severe enough. If the penalty for vandalizing were more harsh perhaps people...
