Act One Plot Summary of Pygmalion

George Bernard Shaw wrote over forty plays during the course long life of 94 years. Pygmalion, written in 1913, became his most famous work. Quick Synopsis Its the tale of a conceited professor of linguistics, Henry Higgins, and the brash, incorrigible young woman named Eliza Doolittle. Higgins sees the cockney girl as a great challenge. Can she learn to speak like a refined English lady? Higgins endeavors to transform Eliza in his own image, and he gets much more than he ever bargained for. Pygmalion in Greek Mythology The title of the play is derived from ancient Greece. According to Greek Mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who created a beautiful statue of a woman. The gods grant the artist a wish by making the sculpture come to life. The main character in Shaws play is not a sculptor; however, he does become enamored with his own creation. Plot Summary of Act One Professor Henry Higgins wanders the streets of London, absorbing the local color and studying the various dialects those around him. A crowd of people huddle together, due to the sudden downpour of rain. A wealthy woman tells her adult son, Freddy to hail a taxi. He complains but obeys, bumping into a young woman selling flowers: Eliza Doolittle. She asks a man to buy flowers from her. He declines, but gives her spare change, for charitys sake. Another man warns Eliza that she should be careful; a stranger has been writing down every word she has been saying. The stranger is Prof. Henry Higgins who reveals his shorthand notes. She is distressed, thinking that she is in trouble. Henry rebukes her: HIGGINS: Dont be ridiculous. Whos hurting you, you silly girl? The crowd gives Higgins a hard time when they realize he is a gentleman instead of a policeman. At first, the citizens are quite concerned about the poor flower girl. Eliza expresses her distress (and reveals the nature of the crowd) in the following quote and subsequent stage direction: ELIZA: I aint done nothing wrong by speaking to the gentleman. Ive a right to sell flowers if I keep off the kerb. (Hysterically) Im a respectable girl: so help me, I never spoke to him except to ask him to buy a flower off me. (General hubbub, mostly sympathetic to the flower girl, but deprecating her excessive sensibility. Cries of Dont start hollerin. Whos hurting you? Nobodys going to touch you. Whats the good of fussing? Steady on. Easy, easy, etc., come from the elderly staid spectators, who pat her comfortingly. Less patient ones bid her shut her head, or ask her roughly what is wrong with her. (...) The flower girl, distraught and mobbed, breaks through them to the gentleman, crying mildly.) Oh, sir, dont let him charge me. You dunno what it means to me. Theyll take away my character and drive me on the streets for speaking to gentlemen. Prof. Higgins listens to peoples accents and cleverly recognizes where they are from and where they have been. The crowd is both impressed and perturbed at his uncanny abilities. The rain stops and the crowd disperses. Colonel Pickering, the man who gave Doolittle spare change, is intrigued by Higgins. The professor explains that he can identify a persons origins based solely on phonetics, the science of speech. Meanwhile, Eliza is still nearby, sulking and muttering to herself. Higgins complains that the flower girls speech is an insult to the majestic English language. Yet he also boasts that he is so skilled in phonetics that he could train her to speak like royalty. Pickering reveals his name, explaining that he has written a book on Indian dialects. By coincidence, Higgins had been hoping to meet the distinguished Colonel, just as Col. Pickering had been hoping to meet Higgins. Delighted by their chance encounter, Higgins insists that Pickering stay at his home. Before they leave, Eliza begs them to buy some of her flowers. Higgins drops a large amount of coins into her basket, amazing the young woman who very likely has never paid so much. She celebrates by taking a taxi cab home. Freddy, the wealthy young man who originally hailed the taxi says Well, Im dashed, in response to the flower girls confident attitude.

Although people in recent years often mistake rap music as vulgar and ill-mannered, the hip hop community continues to provide a great way to channel emotion and soul into their music. In his article, â€Å"The State of Rap: Time and Place† Jeffrey Louis Decker illustrates the black nationalism within the hip hop community by exploring how Black Nationalism can be accounted for within the hip hop music. The whole Rodney King incident consequently gave Ice Cube inspiration for his album Death Certificate. Hip hop artists are usually not involved in politics but are most strongly involved in the cultural politics which tie to the working and urban poor blacks. Eventually hip hop artists later regarded themselves by the name â€Å"hip hop nationalists†. In the sixties, self proclaimed hip hop nationalist rapper Paris debut his album, The Devil Made Me Do It, which sent a message on how he plans on building the black nation. From his tracks â€Å"Panther Power† to â€Å"The Hate That Hate Made†, Paris made sure that his audience knew he associated with the Black Panther Party. During 1988, hip hop marked a landmark on rap music history ever since MTV promoted their hip hop program called â€Å"Yo, MTV Raps! † and within the same year a hip hop group, Public Enemy, released their second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which gave the black nationalist its first publicized expression for two decades. The multiple times the black community was socially mistreated, hip hop artists continued to voice their opinions. I believe hip hop is great to voice an opinion and promote self worth. Ordeals such as the Rodney King case sparked a huge outrage within the black community. Generally, the target population for family violence would include; young girls, women of the middle age and also elder women. This is because domestic violence victims are mostly females, and they tend to experience more severe forms of violence. This doesnt mean that men are not victim .They are, but in rare cases (Ramsay, Rutterford, Gregory, Dunne, Eldridge, Sharp, Feder, 2012). Many girls who experience this abuse, they find it hard to cope with future life of marriage .Domestic violence counselors have to intervene by supporting the victims and help them develop self-esteem and confidence. They do so by trying to get them out of that fear .They also try to end the cycle of violence because many people who experience abuse in childhood become enablers, involving themselves in a series of relationships that escalate into abuse and violence. This affects their normal functioning of their daily activities, and well functioning of their bodies. As a domestic violence counsellor in a local NGO, there are some vital elements that should be observed in order to give quality service. Conducting work within an ethical framework is a critical aspect of professional practice and the possession of abstract specialized knowledge. Knowledge can be defined as the clear and certain understanding or awareness of something as opposed to opinion. There are various practice approaches which can be used by a human service worker depending with the field of practice (Healey, Connolly Humphreys, 2018). For instance, someone working as a domestic violence counselor in a local NGO would prefer to use theoretical approach rather than model or any other .This is because theory is a way of making sense used to explain the relationship between two or more phenomenon. Client centered approach is appropriate in this situation of counseling people who have undergone family violence (Brewer, Roy Smith, 2010).).Theory enables one to better explain what they already know first and relate it with the matter at hand. One should not rely on only one theory to inform his practice and instead should be well conversant with a variety (. This is because most people have started to misuse substances without caring their age, gender and even the side effects accrued by the drug abused. Children, parents and even elderly people are victims. The commonly abused drugs include alcohol, tobacco and marijuana amongst others. People have decided to start rehabilitation centres to attend to drug user. Free counselling is offered to the willing clients to help them understand themselves and make decision for a better change. Treatment is also offered in this facility. Some of the current social issues concerning substance misuse may include, legalizing of illicit drugs (Racine, Forlini, 2010). Some people depend on selling substances like marijuana so that they can improve their living standards, so if this drug is completely illegal they would have a challenge for its their cash crop. Nonmatter how the government prohibits its consumption, they illegally sell. As a social worker in the field of substance misuse I oppose the idea of the majority that marijuana causes no harm to its users. All illicit drugs are harmful to the users health and should be completely prohibited. From the clients that we deal with in the rehabilitation program, we have noted that marijuana and stimulant users have higher occurrence of psychiatric illness compared to non-users. (Lankenau, Teti, Silva, Bloom, Harocopos, Treese, 2012). Drug addiction is brain chronic disorder. Addicted people are in the state of inability to abstain or do without the drug. The social work ers have the know-how of dealing with addicts and helps them change their behavior and also encourage them in counselling. Secondly, it has come to great concern that most of the people who were born normal but now are mentally sick, its as a result of substance misuse. Some of the medical test that have been done to them as a way of research has proven it right. The social workers really have a challenging task to deal with mentally ill clients. Rehabilitation centres are trying to avail the required medicines for them hence making work easier for the social workers. Ethics refers to code of contact or how to behave. Social workers have a code of conduct that they should adhere to while dealing with alcohol and other drug users (Schroeder, Ford, 2012). First, confidentiality-As a social worker, one should be able to keep secret. When the clients are assured that their details will not be disclosed to anyone, they voluntarily come for counselling and rehabilitation and vice versa.
